Think Slow and Other Tricks for Better Problem-Solving

As a kid I was the sort of nerd who got serious about quiz bowl. My senior year of high school I was on a team that advanced to the state playoffs. In college, at a Big Ten university, I was on a team that traveled the Midwest playing other teams of fast-twitch buzzer-mashers.

Whereas some players had deep recall of Russian novels or the periodic table, I tended to skate by on loose-ends trivia: pop culture, sports, the occasional lucky stab at U.S. history. By the time I was old enough to drink, I was a solid bar-trivia player. In a weekly pub game, I once nailed down a win by correctly naming the capital of Uganda (Kampala) on the final question. A different night, a new teammate and I simultaneously blurted the answer “apogee” to a question about the moon’s orbit. Smitten, I asked her out, and we dated for the rest of the summer.

Like I say: nerd.

That was years ago, though, largely before Google even existed, long before everyone toted around wireless internet supercomputers that fit in our jeans. These days any worthwhile bar trivia night strives to be at least partially Google-proof because huge swaths of the world’s loose knowledge have been rounded up and cataloged by the most complex network of machines ever devised. The instant recall of facts, formerly a marker of elite intelligence or at least the image of it, has become an affectation. You want to know the capital of Uganda? Two keywords in a search bar is all you need to get the answer faster than you could even ask the question. Quick recall is now a parlor trick, like grabbing a live fly out of midair, or uncapping a beer bottle with a folded dollar bill. An intelligence predicated on stockpiling facts is outmoded, naïve. Look what happened in the past 20 years to card catalogs, road atlases and Rolodexes. The databanking that got you through multiple-choice tests no longer secures your relevance. Just ask a phone book.

But these are heady days to examine the way you think, if you’re willing: Neuroscience and the rise of artificial intelligence (more on that later) have given us new insights into the interplay between the mind and the brain, two interlocked (but sometimes competing) parts of ourselves. For those of us who long conflated a facile memory with actual smarts, though, analyzing our own thought habits is about as enticing as counting carbs or auditing credit card bills. Some routines are so entrenched that drilling into them requires a confrontation with the ego. Especially if you’re the sort who considers yourself a good thinker. Which is most people, likely, in part because they give so little thought to the matter. If you weren’t good at thinking, well, wouldn’t that catch up with you? Surely, yes, of course, ergo, there’s no need to think about the matter further. Though if you did, being such a good thinker, would you not, assuredly, come up with a way to improve your thinking even further?

In his new book Winning the Brain Game: Fixing the 7 Fatal Flaws of Thinking, Matthew E. May sets out a convincing case that no one much likes to examine the ways he or she thinks, in part because we’re so conditioned to cheap rewards for quick answers that we scarcely bother to do much real thinking at all. May explains that he’s the sort of guy who’s hired by companies large and small to stump workers and executives with brain teasers. This sounds like great work if you can get it, and the way he writes about these sessions—breezily, almost like a street magician recalling audiences he stumped—sounds like a guy who genuinely has hacked into something fundamental, and likely true about being a person in the 21st century: We have access to so much external knowledge, we’ve forgotten how to ask ourselves decent questions. School rewards answers—fast ones. Work rewards productivity, predicated usually on finding paths of least resistance.

May’s enduring thesis, and one that’s hard to debate, is that we’ve been conditioned by a lifetime of, essentially, trivia contests to mistake the regurgitation of facts for thinking. Rather, he argues, the rote recall of information—or the obligatory regurgitation of possible solutions at top speed—takes place somewhere outside the analytical mind, constituting a reaction less intellectual, more glandular in nature. “Our brains are amazing pattern machines: making, recognizing, and acting on patterns developed from our experience and grooved over time,” he writes. “Following those grooves makes us ever so efficient as we go about our day. The challenge is this: if left to its own devices, the brain locks in on patterns, and it’s difficult to escape the gravitational pull of embedded memory in order to see things in an altogether new light.”

This strikes me as likely true. Those of us who went through American schools have been conditioned to rely on those patterned responses, the fast responses, for decades. Looking back, the best quiz bowl players always buzzed in before the proctor finished reading the question.

***

In May’s day job, he prods groups, in any project, to reach for what he calls “elegant” solutions. Those, by and large, are the simplest, cheapest, least-intrusive, most-effective changes you can make on a system. Lesser solutions, he finds, tend to trade quality for speed. He insists that many of the reasons we fail to find elegant solutions are self-inflicted. We overthink a problem, or jump to conclusions, or decide after a few minutes of mumbly debate that we’ve come up with a solid B-minus answer, and we’re ready to move on to the next emergency. A less charitable author might describe those pitfalls as themselves lazy, but realistically they’re the shortcuts any person uses to navigate the zillion gnatlike tasks that drain our attention. You make these mistakes and compromises because your brain has evolved over eons to value functional near-facts over perfectly crystalline truths. And often, “good enough” is so-called for a reason. Duct tape and Taco Bell are revered for a reason.

He offers a version of a brain teaser in sessions with clients; the team he sketches in the book happened to be Los Angeles Police Department bomb technicians, the sort of group whose members regard themselves as unflappable thinkers and decision-makers. Here’s the scenario he poses: You run a fancy health club that in its shower stalls offers fancy shampoo, in big bottles that would retail for $50 at a salon. Unshockingly, these big bottles often go the way of a hotel bathrobe: Members take them home at a distressing rate, costing you. What solution can the bomb techs devise that will be unintrusive, cheap to free, and protect your inventory?

Yes, sure, you could switch to travel bottles, or force guests to check the shampoo out, but these will complicate operations at your otherwise immaculate and successful health club, so think harder. He says the employees at the real-life club that faced this problem figured out an unintrusive, simple solution that cost no money. It is one any bright child could devise. And yet the bomb techs didn’t arrive at it in their few minutes talking it over (and neither did I as I read the book). In a health club where people are stashing a big ol’ bottle of fancy shampoo in their gym bags on their way out, merely uncapping the bottles, it turns out, is one heck of a deterrent.

When groups tackle this problem, he writes, he sees all seven of the typical categories of thinking mistakes he lays out in the book. To summarize them as a holistic piece of advice for how to think smarter: Be more deliberate. Ask many questions before deciding on an answer. Do not accept a sloppy solution because it is easy. Do not talk yourself out of great ideas. Do not reject solutions because someone else came up with them.

All of this sounds rightly agreeable when laid out in those terms. No one thinks of herself as a sloppy thinker, but then, such is the tautology; a careful thinker would already know the pitfalls in his own process. Even then, history is littered with terrible ideas that lasted a very long time. As Carl Sagan wrote in his book Cosmos of Ptolemy, an astronomer of ancient Greece, “his Earth-centered universe held sway for 1,500 years, a reminder that intellectual capacity is no guarantee against being dead wrong.”

The more you force yourself to think slowly, the more likely your brain becomes to engage that gear.

It’s freeing to realize you’re probably, profoundly, deeply wrong about something you believe very much. Freeing, because it gives you permission to think intently on what exactly that might be. We’re all victims of our hard-wiring, you see, and May revels in citing studies in neuroscience and behavioral psychology to point to our flaws, as well as our ability to overcome those. “The brain is passive hardware, absorbing experience, and the mind is active software, directing our attention,” he writes. “But not just any software—it’s intelligent software, capable of rewiring the hardware. I could not have said that with confidence a few decades ago, but modern science is a wonderful thing.” This is, in a nutshell, the value of bothering to bother. The more you force yourself to think slowly, the more likely your brain becomes to engage that gear.

***

To engage your slow thinking, May builds his book largely as he sets up his seminars: around sinister Mensa-style riddles that make you aware of how inflexible you’ve let your brain become. Most are incredibly simple, which is what makes them so humbling. The favorite here is the classic Monty Hall Problem, a distillation of the crux of the show Let’s Make a Deal. In a book called Winning the Brain Game, it feels like a required stop.

The old game show climaxed with a logic puzzle folded into a game of chance. You, the contestant, were offered the choice of three doors. Behind one door was a fabulous prize—say, a car. Behind two doors were booby prizes—in the classic arrangement, goats. Whichever door you choose, the host, Monty Hall, will pause before revealing it. Then he’ll open one of the remaining two doors to show you a goat. He’ll ask: Do you want to stick with your original door, or switch?

Strangely, this innocuous question, raised many times over the years but notably in a 1991 Parade Magazine column, creates genuine havoc. May takes glee in recounting the fallout from the solution offered by columnist Marilyn vos Savant—that one should always switch doors. Professional mathematicians at the time wrote in to upbraid her for numerical illiteracy, insisting it was a 50/50 proposition. Even after vos Savant was vindicated and previously incensed Ph.D.s wrote in with mea culpas, the spat echoed for years. When The New York Times revisited the logic problem in 2008, for instance, the paper built an online video game for readers to play for goats and cars, to keep score over many tries. And sure enough, you click on enough doors, you learn to switch.

The reason could scarcely be simpler. When you choose one door, you leave two doors for Monty. At least one of those doors must by definition have a goat, and at the turn, he’ll always show you a goat—but then, you had to know he always has a goat to show. There’s a two-in-three chance that you didn’t pick the car when you chose your door. When he offers to trade the closed door for your closed door, he’s effectively giving you both of the doors you passed on with your original choice.

Two for one. A two-thirds chance of winning. By switching doors, you raise the possibility of winning a car by 100 percent. And still this strikes many people as counterintuitive. When you hold onto that first door, it somehow seems more likely to hold a car. The decision to stay, May writes, is easy, and lets you rest without scrutinizing the actual odds.

A Harvard University statistics professor Persi Diaconis told the Times reporter John Tierney in a 1991 story about the fracas: “Our brains are just not wired to do probability problems very well, so I’m not surprised there were mistakes.” Such a simple little trap is the Monty Hall Problem, and yet its very name was coined in a paper written about it for a 1976 paper in the journal American Statistician. This tiny puzzle is taken very seriously. Your intellectual capacity is no protection against being wrong.

At some point in the near future, robots will handle a lot of the rote chores (and even deep intellectual efforts) that sap us on a given day. But even now, artificial intelligence (AI) researchers are grappling with the ways computer intelligence built to perform a specific job might hack that task, in a nearly human fashion, by rearranging its priorities to derive the largest reward under its programming. In a paper titled “Concrete Problems in AI Safety,” published in June, a team of AI researchers, including three from Google, forecast many of the pitfalls and workarounds that an AI bot (their hypothetical is a housecleaning robot) would devise to satisfy its assignments. Oddly, several of them sound like what any teacher or boss would have to consider if working with a petulant or nervous teenager. How do you keep robots from breaking things or getting in people’s way as they rush to finish a job? How do you keep it from asking too many questions?

The most human concern, to me, is how do we keep it from gaming the rewards system? “For example, if our cleaning robot is set up to earn reward for not seeing any messes, it might simply close its eyes rather than ever cleaning anything up,” the researchers write. “Or if the robot is rewarded for cleaning messes, it may intentionally create work so it can earn more reward.” It’s a complex question, one that examines much of what we take for granted as a basic social contract. Taken literally, though, it points to the problem of fixation, of setting monomaniacal goals. A cleaning robot that believes, say, that its use of bleach is a good measure for how much work it has done might simply bleach everything it encounters. “In the economics literature,” the AI researchers write, “this is known as Goodhart’s law: ‘When a metric is used as a target, it ceases to be a good metric.’” The stated goal, in other words, is rarely the actual goal.

Yet we all set goals, and May’s business is to help us figure out how to reach them. At times his framework betrays how accustomed he is to working for big corporate clients who no doubt respond best when employees and middle managers are told to ignore all limits on the way to greatness. He enrolls for this exercise a 60-something potato farmer named Cliff Young who, in 1983, entered an ultramarathon in Australia—a 542-mile run from Sydney to Melbourne. Shabbily attired, unsponsored and untrained, he nonetheless managed to beat a field of professional runners by 10 hours over five days. Why? Well, he apparently had become ludicrously fit by scampering around his farm chasing livestock over the years. But to May’s point, he simply had no idea the conventions of the sport held that runners should sleep six hours a night during the race. May writes: “In fact, his naïveté in all likelihood enabled him to win in the manner he did—because he didn’t know it ‘couldn’t be done,’ he was empowered to do it.”

That’s an amazing example, overlooking though it does the many, many, many things considered impossible because in fact they are, firmly, impossible. More inspiring to me, and probably to schlubs everywhere, is the embrace of our natural limits. You free up a lot of mental and emotional bandwidth to do great things when you stop chastising yourself for not being the Cliff Young in this analogy. Yeah, you might wind up running seven-minute miles for the better part of a week and become a folk hero straight from the farm. But more often, you’re going to be trying to figure out how not to make an arithmetic error or obvious typo in an email to a client when you’re in the 10th hour of your workday, wondering whether you should cook dinner or just say to hell with it and stop at said Taco Bell on the way home. We all bump up against our limits in different ways, and as it turns out, many of them are real.

Inevitably though, the simpler the problem you face, the more likely you are to get it right, and a small, correct thought can be infinitely more valuable than a large, incorrect one, even an incorrect one off by just a few degrees. The lesson I took from May’s analysis: Shrink your problems to a size that allows you to think clearly about them. Do this by first asking very good questions. Then, as you build to an answer, be aware of the pitfalls your brain invariably will stumble into as a clumsy instrument of human apprehension. No thought forms in a vacuum; most are derived from the leftover crumbs of old thoughts.

I experienced this recently when driving to a wedding shower in a suburb of Chicago I’d never visited. I turned onto the street of the home I was driving to, saw about 10 cars parked around a driveway and the adjoining street, and thought, This must be the place. It was inane of me to leap to that conclusion without so much as glancing at the house numbers. During a long day of travel, in an unfamiliar setting, I reached for an answer that would be comfortingly simple. But in part because I had May on my mind, I was fully prepared to notice why I was messing up, and to call myself on it.

“The brain is passive hardware, absorbing experience, and the mind is active software, directing our attention.“

Knowing when and why our brains take shortcuts (and why we let them) allows us to catch ourselves (our brains?) in the act. And it also hones our intuition around when we are, as May terms it, “downgrading” or “satisficing”—essentially, convincing ourselves to tap out early—or just staying in our usual rut.

It’s comforting to know that human intelligence, like the artificial intelligences we’re bringing into the world, is capable of being hacked. Most of what May proposes falls under the heading of habits to cultivate. One trick, though, sits right at hand for any stressful occasion. It begins with seeing oneself impartially, a tendency May traces to Adam Smith’s concept of an “impartial and well-informed spectator.” In our best moments, most of us hope to be that spectator for ourselves, and one way to accomplish that is to treat ourselves as a spectator. May cites a University of Michigan study that found people who addressed themselves in the second person or by their own name (You got this; Sam totally has this) to psych themselves up for a speech did better and felt less anxiety than people who used the first person (I got this). In a sense we are our best selves when we leave ourselves momentarily, look back in, and reassure everyone that, having done all you can, it’s going to be fine, so long as we take our time.

  9. poverty will still often be a reality, even if relative poverty.Josh, I'm not exactly a big grouper myself and I'm not thrilled to be proposing this, but I do see events approaching a last resort stage. I have little confidence that trying to win the fight within the culture is still viable. If you believe that it is, I'm happy to cheer you on. And this is not about cutting everyone else off, it's about fighting to preserve and revive what's left.Anon, homosexuality is a symptom of cultural problems. Reducing it to the central focus is unhealthy.

  10. Blake,You touch upon a key point. The life/safety of an officer does not take precedent in these situations. All life is of equal value.Deadly force is authorized only to prevent loss of life. Further loss of life. It does not matter if the perps killed 50 people in the execution phase of their crime. Once they go into barricade mode the counter restarts and they must exhibit hostile intent before they can be green lighted/lit.We seem to have lost that concept these days.jim

Use a can of pizza sauce, put on some shredded cheese and put it in the toaster until everything was all melty. Easy dinner.

Where did we get that from? Certainly not Mom or Dad. I’ve gone to open houses with 37 steps just to get in the front door. Why? Just because I could.

  40. Hi! I am struggling with cycstic acne on ortho tri cyclen lo. I have read so many blogs about girls complaining about acne, especially on the chin and jaw. I am starting Yaz tomorrow. Some girls have posted that it makes skin worse. I really hope it clears me up. I’m also on Erythromycin and tretinoin cream and clindamycin. Crossing my fingers for Yaz. So hopeful for clear skin, and I am making videos to track my journey as well. Thank you for sharing!

  42. Thank you a lot for giving everyone an extremely remarkable possiblity to read critical reviews from this web site. It really is so amazing and full of a great time for me and my office colleagues to search your blog nearly three times every week to learn the newest tips you have. And indeed, I’m so at all times pleased for the fantastic tips served by you. Certain 1 facts in this posting are rather the best we’ve ever had.

  43. Good post. I be taught something more challenging on totally different blogs everyday. It would always be stimulating to learn content material from other writers and follow just a little one thing from their store. I抎 prefer to use some with the content material on my blog whether you don抰 mind. Natually I抣l provide you with a hyperlink on your internet blog. Thanks for sharing.

  44. Of course a trip to Paris needs to be an exception to all stash-busting rules! Personally, I haven’t bought any new fabric this year, so I’m pleased about that. You make a good point about buying larger quantities of buttons! Sometimes I find cute buttons and can’t resist them, and then I still have them years later because I only have three or four.

  45. Jamie Hensley – I celebrated a major birthday last month, and my lovely daughter threw a surprise party for me! After a fabulous lunch at one of my favorite restaurants, she had arranged for a private scrapbooking after-party at the LSS. I had a wonderful day!JamieH

  47. I’d have to agree with you on all accounts there mate. Nothing has change at all, if anything Liverpool have got worse & it doesn’t look like subsiding soon neither, i have a saying that ‘certain players only work well in a specific certain system’, i think Charlie Adam is the shining example of what i mean in that aspect, he did GREAT for Blackpool in their system, that, coupled with the fact he was the main man. I think Liverpool is too big a step for him.

  48. Thanks Eileen. I miss all of you too! I wish we could all have bunco here in Istanbul. Hopefully when you all go to the coast we can skype. 50. I’m sorry the shoes caused such an issue. It can be scary to try something new and have it wreck your legs like that. It certainly sounds like it gave you a case of shin splints. If your calves are that tight try and find an Active Release Therapist in your area. It is amazing how quickly it get you back on the road, if you can’t roll your shins and calves twice a day on a foam roller to get those knots out. I’m thinking you may want to go back to your current shoes for the rest of this training.

  54. I love the pics! Out feeding the horses how cool is that. I love Maya’s cute little cheeks.I miss when Ryan was just learning to walk around the furniture. We made a big circle of large toys and furniture and he would entertain himself for hours just walking around the circle. I never had to tell him no or worry about him getting into anything. Ahhhh life was so much simpler then

  55. Agreed OHIO, however Romney holds a special place for Michigan voters. It his "home" state and his father was Governor there. So a Michigan pick-up is far more likely for Romney, even if he doesn't win Ohio. Although I agree it will be difficult, polls have shown Romney beating Obama by 4% -5%. For any other candiate, winning Michigan will be impossible whether or not Ohio is won. Firecracker

  56. “Above all things, … “Above all things, Jesuits are ‘confessors’. Their services unto the royalty were urged as a ‘need’, as they became assigned to hear the confessions of the aristocrats, emperors, kings, queens, princes, princesses, [‘royal’] mistresses, those in every level of government — they all revealed their secret plans, their intimate sins, their inner-most thoughts, as their lives became virtually an open book to the Jesuits. 59. I’m really impressed with your writing skills as well as with the layout on your blog.Is this a paid theme or did you modify it yourself?Either way keep up the excellent quality writing, it is rare to see a nice blog like this one today..Best Regards Shane

  61. All awards have lost their shine. Being lauded by the normal bunch of jumped up fuckos who make up awards juries these days is hardly a ringing endorsment of anyone’s talents. Now who, despite not knowing who I am nor how many awards I have won, is going to make a hilarious joke implying that I am merely bitter about not having won any awards?

  62. “debating evolutionists-atheists … you can meet their challenges and it really never makes any difference”Of course it doesn’t, Isaac. This is because in your view, meeting the challenges of your intellectual superiors means making incoherent noises on an absolutely insane and pathetic Web site. You are talking to yourself here. Christ, what a mess.

  63. i just saw it today and though im not a movie reviewer i do mostly stories. But this movie was okay but there seems to be inconsistency with the plot in the 4 movies. the first, Lycans bad but in the end both are bad. Second, vamps and lycan are bad. Third, vamps bad, lycan good. This, vamps good lycan bad again. and in all of them hybrid good. It seems to me but its just me that the plot is good but why send a double message from both opposing sides that each is good? since 3 has the lycan POV

Multumesc mult Ada ! :X

  66. Oh Suzanne, you take me back… it’s no small feat writing your thesis! At least it wasn’t for me. Yes, it’s a happy day to have your draft ready. Good luck with your review. Just remember, that soon you will be past this. I hope you can have fun in the process!

  70. I would currently no like to see Sarah Palin run. Think she is an OK politician and a lot more like able than most of the Repubs, but the media hate her with a passion. The absolute circus that election would be… Though don't know if the repubs got anyone better. I think she is just as qualified as Obama, course that isn't a high bar. I could see them bringing out Tina Fey again to impersonate her and most of the electorate thought the skits with Tina were actually Sarah Palin. So I don't think it would end well.

  72. Many thanks for sharing these kind of wonderful threads. In addition, the ideal travel as well as medical insurance strategy can often reduce those concerns that come with touring abroad. A medical crisis can soon become extremely expensive and that’s sure to quickly put a financial load on the family’s finances. Having in place the best travel insurance bundle prior to leaving is worth the time and effort. Thanks

  74. June 25, 2009 – 7:12 am Great article. One of my small business clients is interested in SEO and told me he found someone who can do it for $200! I told him that sounds too good to be true. It indeed requires a decision between investing a lot of your time or a substantial amount of money.

  75. Wow, superb blog layout! How long have you been blogging for? you made blogging look easy. The overall look of your web site is excellent, as well as the content!. Thanks For Your article about Travel Guide to Visit Melbourne .

  76. Both of my children have nicknames and I still call them by ‘em. Addison’s nicknames Boo, Boo-Bear or Addie & Ethan’s nicknames are Beauford or E. I don’t think there is anything wrong with giving your children nicknames and continuing to call them by that name. I also don’t see anything wrong with Boogie! 🙂 It’s cute!Jessica´s last [type] ..

  77. The ‘other speakers’? What other speakers?I think some of the comments are from viewers who don’t know the intent/purpose of the dinner. It’s isn’t sponsored by the press to skewer the president, the government, or anyone else. It’s a celebration of the fact – almost 100 years of it – that we can criticize the government and not end up dead or in Siberia for it.

  81. I still have 4, yet I really only have 3 because I deleted one that was a link to a porn site…thanks for allowing that sort of junk on YouTube…and beta shmeta, the old player is better…also on some of your help links, people have named their channels the same name, so instead of going to the intended link, you end up on a useless channel, haha… (Check the "go to remixer here" link in "glossary" for instance)…you did ask!

  82. This opening suggests a more in-depth story on those missing people on that famous Sochi photo. Because there are more cosmonauts to-be that were erased from it. I was a bit dissapointed to find out the emphasis was on those tedious fake stories that keep being brought up by conspiracy thinkers. The story of those actual missing people on that picture might have been a much more interesting main story. Have you read “The Rocket Men” by Rex Hall and David Shayler? if not, I’d recommend it, it’s a good read!

  83. You'll also obtain costless support from our product sales representatives who are astonishingly knowledgeable within our companies and who can provide particulars within one of the most worthwhile products. All we need is primarily a valid electronic mail address.

  84. Debra asked “what colours did you use to get your beautiful effects on the Whisper White card stock?Sorry Debra, I did the Main image piece a few days ago and put away the colors I used. I wanted to mainly focus on the flourishes so I didn’t take note. I’ll try to keep track in the future.

  85. I do a fair number of author interviews and, on and off the record, ask most authors what a “literary” novel is.The best definition I heard came from Nelson DeMille who told me a literary novel was one in which the author chose every word carefully.Obviously most writers try to do this, a very few succeed and we will know who they are fifty or a hundred years after they are dead.

  86. This is a great class, especially if you’re trying to fulfill your Shakespeare requirement for the English major. You cover a lot of plays, but learn some very interesting things about them and Shakespeare as a person and writer. Professor Billings is extremely knowledgeable about the topic and therefore brings a great deal to discussion and lectures. The work is more than manageable and the grades are very reasonable and fair.

  92. How many times have you read posts from these people whining about minor stuff they did not like or falling over themselves thanking a brand for providing that “special” service? I still gag every time I see mention of one mighty ego who got a steak delivered to the airport for free!

It often sounded like the line between Alexisonfire and City and Colour wasn’t as defined as I’d like it to be.From this new stuff though,a song like Sleeping Sickness wouldn’t sound out of place alongside Bon Iver, which to my mind is a MASSIVE complement.

  96. I don’t ever eat cupcakes due to their overwhelming ratio of icing to cake. I am more of a coffee cake or muffin fan. But, my wife could see your great photos while looking over my shoulder from across the room and immediately started reading this post. She is already making notes for our next trip. I told her that I would agree to do the crawl as long as there is a bar near each stop. ( I’ll make sure we do the MK part of the crawl very early in the morning).

  97. All of the countries have to share this burden. Climate is change is happening in the whole world, so it is everybody’s problem. We can’t just focus out attention on the developed countries, soon developing countries might be emitting just as much CO2 into the atmosphere. Tho I agree that we must press China, USA, Canada to do something about their situation.

  98. to jon, this is not actually the case.sure, costs are up, but they are still way below ours. the real issue is logistics. ports are at capacity, as is rail and road in china.it's the longer and less predictable delivery times driving manufacture back here, not cost.if it costs $1 there and $2 here, why would you move back if the cost jumped to $1.05? you wouldn't unless there was some other reason.

  99. Posted on December 19, 2012 at 1:58 amYour penning manner is pleasing and also the way you managed the subject with grace is commendable. I am intrigued, I presume you are an professional on this subject. I just sign up for your RSS feed.

  100. for our own fine country. That stimulus is leading to some inflation now, with additional risks from a shaky and politicized banking system. But overall, my take is that the Chinese internal consumer is well-poised to take up the slack of export decline, thanks again to the smart stimulus above. It was part of a big pivot to reduce dependence on exports, improve internal infrastructure, and maintain employment. China has plenty of problems, but their development path remains strong, with a huge backlog of peasants and a state terrified of holding them back or seeing them unemployed.

  101. randian-i think it's even more ominous than that.obamacare is like installing a cliff and driving a bulldozer.the cliff is the 40% tax on cadillac plans.the bulldozer is banning cheap plans and and hiking up coverage and benefit requirements and letting inflation work (note that the cadillac level in not inflation indexed) until you push most of the market off the cliff.they, you cry "market failure" and drive through signle payer, for which this has been a trojan horse all along.it's an ugly, duplicitous business.

  102. yeah. and her powerful shot is not as effective as back then. I think thats the reason she kind of out of place right now. because to me her biggest asset is her power. I think she’s even more powerful than serena.

Its indeed a commendable feat to organize this epoch event. I am inspired to be part of this event as a designer and i will like to have details of the event as it unfold. Thank you so much.

  105. I just like the helpful information you supply on your articles.

  106. Can I simply say what a comfort to discover somebody who genuinely understands what they’re discussing online. You certainly realize how to bring a problem to light and make it important. A lot more people need to look at this and understand this side of the story. I can’t believe you’re not more popular since you definitely have the gift.

  108. Oh my goodness! Impressive article dude! Thank you so much, However I am going through troubles with your RSS. I don’t understand why I can’t join it. Is there anyone else getting similar RSS issues? Anybody who knows the answer can you kindly respond? Thanx!!

I’ve paid my overdue bills by selling pictures of my overdue bills. I’ve sold pictures of all sorts of unusual subjects, things that other photographers, thankfully, overlook. In my view, one of the most valuable assets in stock photography is a good editorial sense. Reply

  112. Oct29Nicole Instead of worrying about getting corporate sponsors for schoolbuses, we should look around for the nominal amount of funds to add to existing signs (street signs, signs on highways where traffic sits, etc.) that say something like “Funded with taxpayer money.”

  113. What do you think, Argiedude? If we compare Merante (QXGKN), Prowting (JUDZ8), Donato (796ME) and Ferrero (FMTPA), the first three from Calabria and the fourth from Piedmont, they have a MRCA between 1,000 and 1,200 YBP.If we add Jlelati (G5CCP) from Lebanon they have a MRCA between 1,350 and 1620 YBP.If we add Thiel (8334H), probably from Switzerland (Rhaetia), we have a MRCA between 1550 and 1860 YBP.Do you think it is more likely that this cluster is from Italy or from Middle East?

  115. Right here is the right web site for everyone who really wants to find out about this topic. You realize a whole lot its almost hard to argue with you (not that I personally will need to…HaHa).You definitely put a fresh spin on a topic that’s been written about for decades. Excellent stuff, just wonderful!

  116. Yesterday, while I was at work, my sister stole my apple ipad and tested
to see if it can survive a 25 foot drop, just so she can be
a youtube sensation. My iPad is now destroyed and she has 83 views.
I know this is totally off topic but I had to share it with someone!

  117. Hey there! I realize this is somewhat off-topic however I needed to ask.
Does operating a well-established blog like yours take a massive amount work?
I’m completely new to running a blog however I do write in my journal daily.

I’d like to start a blog so I can share my own experience and views online.
Please let me know if you have any kind of ideas or tips for new aspiring bloggers.

  120. cuenten, cuenten, aprendieron mucho?

  121. In Texas, bicycle riders can’t be charged with DUI/DWI. State law defines those for motorized vehicles. But as the Austin Chief of Police recently pointed out (quite strongly) at a recent ACA meeting, you can be charged with public intoxication. This includes arrest and impoundment of the “vehicle” based on officer’s judgement. Should the DWI law be rewritten? Perhaps. Not sure if cycling under influence is a huge problem but in the interest of fairness…

  122. Back when I lived in Northern California I’d drink this all the time. When I moved back and couldn’t find it locally I would always conspire about different ways to get my favorite west coast beers back to the area. Road trip, packed in a hardshell suitcase, hounding local distributors, etc.Luckily for us, you can find this around now. I’ve purchased it at Crossover Liquor and Liquor Mart. I’ve also ordered it while sitting at the bar at Brewskis. Now if I could just get the Lagunitas stuff in the ‘ville I’d really be set!

  123. Multiplayer would be nice, it’s just FAR FAR too difficult for me to do on my own for such a complicated and chaotic physics based game. Online multiplayer is nearly impossible for indies to do (except with slow games, like RTS and turn-based) but this is such an unusual concept it makes it even harder.Non-developers don’t realize this, but online multiplayer is the single hardest technical thing to do in the development of a video game, without question

Jep.

  126. Woah! I’m really digging the template/theme of this site.
It’s simple, yet effective. A lot of times it’s hard to get that
“perfect balance” between superb usability and visual appeal.

I must say you have done a great job with this.
Also, the blog loads extremely quick for me on Chrome.
    Exceptional Blog!

  127. Nothing like a little breathing space to recharge the batteries and prepare for fresh content later on. Not always easy to take a day or two off from posting, but it can be a good thing. Give readers a chance to catch up on posts. Enjoy, Sardinia.Gennaros last blog post..

  128. That is a fantastic article!I think as far as music styles go, there is plenty of room on an album for a variety of styles and the more variety the better. I think an English album should have the kind of music they have been doing for years, some electro pop and a couple of ballads. I also like to hear them do one track that is completely out of the box and different from anything they have ever done.

  130. We wish to thank you yet again for the gorgeous ideas you offered Jeremy when preparing a post-graduate research and also, most importantly, regarding providing many of the ideas in one blog post. If we had known of your web site a year ago, we might have been kept from the unwanted measures we were participating in. Thank you very much.

  135. Wow. I had no idea. Gaddafi’s shitty self was all over the place. I can understand why he would meddle in Africa, being in Africa, and Europe, being so close to the Mediterranean Sea. What I don’t understand is his meddling in Pakistan. He armed a gang called “Hathora Group,” or the “Hammer Group,” in Pakistan to take revenge for his ex-PM Bhutto’s hanging. They bludgeoned random people to death.

  136. You could definitely see your expertise in the work you write. The arena hopes for more passionate writers such as you who are not afraid to mention how they believe. Always follow your heart. “Every man serves a useful purpose A miser, for example, makes a wonderful ancestor.” by Laurence J. Peter.

  137. Interestingly the "paper" of the Neolithic graveyard from JEBEL AL-BUHAIS “BHS18” "United Arab Emirates" makes a similar statement.Page. 160The BHS 18 postcranial indices show a relatively close affinity to Linear Bandceramic series excavated in Germany, which date 5th and 6th millennium BC. However, earlier and later series from Viesenhäuser Hof vary considerably. The differences might be explained by migration.(Wahl and Burger-Heinrich, personal communication.)

  140. I have not checked in here for a while as I thought it was getting boring, but the last few posts are great quality so I guess I’ll add you back to my everyday bloglist. You deserve it my friend 🙂

  141. Now I have seen EVERYTHING. A leopard print frock with pockets. That designer is a freakin' genius. Why doesn't everything have pockets? I keep smashing my hands down the sides of the otherwise awesome blogger-swapped skirt I'm wearing, involuntarily seeking pocket refuge.I love the kitteh pics! I was telling The Absent Minded Professor last night I can't believe I haven't lived with a kitteh since 1986 (brought one of Megan Mae's kittens home in June). You know who loves that cat the most? Our Welsh Corgi :oCan I have your autograph?

Herzlich willkommen!

  146. Thanks Mathmom!!!My kids love them too!!! It makes me wish we could do something fun like this again, with the kids. But just organizing my panels, etc., for Sunstone and the T-shirts for this crazy reunion is more than I have time to handle.Actually, speaking of my trip — is there any chance you'll be in MN in July?

  148. Undeniably believe that which you stated. Your favorite reason appeared to be on the net the easiest thing to be aware of. I say to you, I certainly get irked while people think about worries that they plainly don’t know about. You managed to hit the nail upon the top and defined out the whole thing without having side effect , people can take a signal. Will likely be back to get more. Thanks

  150. Its like you read my mind! You appear to know so much about this, like you wrote the book in it or something. I think that you can do with some pics to drive the message home a little bit, but instead of that, this is fantastic blog. An excellent read. I will definitely be back.

  157. I agree Alex. “Make a small income by blogging” sounds so humble, yet for most people that small income could open up a few doors. I suppose it’s the reason why people would rather buy lottery tickets than get a second job. Overnight riches. Get rich without doing anything. It’s very appealing even if it’s a complete play on emotions and nothing else.

  158. Thanks both for your answers, what you are saying does indeed make a lot of sense, and I don't disagree with what you are saying. My main point though is that in the context of Israel's occupation of East Jerusalem which is not recognised by any other countries, the eviction of families from their homes is always likely to be seen as bullying and hypocritical. If the context were different i.e. issues like this were resolved in the framework of regional and international agreement I doubt it would be a controversial story.bh.

  159. I'm not sure I really believe in the idea that if you wait you're more likely to have a real relationship. Sure, some guys won't date a girl they hook up with on the first date, but do you really want those guys anyway? I agree that it's probably a good rule of thumb, but as several of my longest relationships started after very early hookups I don't really feel compelled to follow it.

  165. This is getting a bit more subjective, but I much prefer the Zune Marketplace. The interface is colorful, has more flair, and some cool features like ‘Mixview’ that let you quickly see related albums, songs, or other users related to what you’re listening to. Clicking on one of those will center on that item, and another set of “neighbors” will come into view, allowing you to navigate around exploring by similar artists, songs, or users. Speaking of users, the Zune “Social” is also great fun, letting you find others with shared tastes and becoming friends with them. You then can listen to a playlist created based on an amalgamation of what all your friends are listening to, which is also enjoyable. Those concerned with privacy will be relieved to know you can prevent the public from seeing your personal listening habits if you so choose.

  166. Hey 8.04pm, The Australian Taronga Zoo campaign which picked up at Canne happened ten years ago. Not sure that's current evidence for the 'cancer' spreading to Australia. But what's the bigger scam? Judges awarding amazing work that didn't run or judges pushing ok work over the line because they're a drinking mate.I'm not sure, but for me it explains why traditionally D&AD is full of advertising awards for people who work, or used to work, in a 2 square mile radius of London's SOHO.

  168. Avidon: I have been hoping for the blockbuster all along. The D12 pipedream does not look good now, and I would love to see other alternatives for dealing PG, because we need major change. However, I have not seen even the rumor of a trade that did not involve D12, that I thought made us a contender. I go along with the 1+3 tinker trades, because there is nothing better. Other than if we pursue your nuclear option.

  170. 13. and 15. At least Bosh had the (I’m assuming here) professionalism to let Toronto know he was leaving. Toronto appeared to have a contingency plan in place. I really do believe, given Windhurst’s account of how it all went down, that they would retain LBJ’s services, ergo, their FO was caught flat-footed and stunned.Sorry to talk about LBJ in this post, but it’s not that he went to Miami, but just the way he did it that irks me and 99.99% of the people out there. And don’t even start with “Rev.” Jesse Jackson’s comments about the “$100 mil+, aspiring billionaire slave mentality.”
